Hello,

We realise that you are at one of the most important turning points of your life. Choosing a profession is very important in terms of shaping your future. We hope that you will have a profession that will bring you happiness.

The purpose of creating this page is to introduce Geomatics Engineering and our Department as clearly and accurately as possible. It is up to you whether you choose it or not :)

The term "Geomatics" may sound a little foreign to you and you may think of it as one of the newly derived professions. However, it is a deep-rooted profession that goes back to Çatalhöyük (Konya, Türkiye) where the first human settlement was seen. In our country, it was established in 1949 at the Yıldız Technical University as "Department of Mapping and Cadastral Engineering", and in time it was named Geodesy and Photogrammetry Engineering. Today, all departments use one of the names "Map" or "Geomatics" Engineering and after graduation, they can register with TMMOB Chamber of Mapping and Cadastral Engineers.

So why does our Department use the name "Geomatics Engineering"? The truth of the matter is that our profession today makes various applications that cannot be limited to "map" and while doing this, it closely follows and uses technological developments. For example, images and data obtained by satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, drones) or amateur devices such as mobile phones, aerial and ground laser scanners (lidars), various ground measuring devices, underwater measuring devices, etc. can be used in the solution of any problem you can think of by evaluating the measurements obtained by geometric and mathematical methods and thus helping decision makers. Thus, they have the opportunity to work either in the public or private sector, as well as being the boss of their own company.

We are not only engineers who produce maps or cadastral works. For example, we work together with disaster experts to determine the risk of a disaster (e.g. earthquake) by making observations and quickly and accurately determine the damage after the disaster, meet the location information requirements in precision agriculture studies, determine whether the metric applications of a construction project are done correctly. In the manufacturing sector, we model a part to be produced in a computer environment and determine whether the product is produced correctly, create a 3D model of an archaeological excavation area or any object, determine the spatial distribution of a disease or epidemic and its relationship with triggering factors, or perform object recognition applications such as face recognition. We even have an extremely important place in space studies. In short, from the navigation application on your mobile phone to the computer game on your tablet, Geomatics Engineers have a great share in all activities of mankind on Earth or in space.
